Making Stuff Happen

One of my "resolutions" for 2017 was to be more proactive when it comes to work and advocacy, and the last few weeks were a fairly decent start.

I finally got around to making an appointment to speak with someone at the employment centre where I did the placement. It went pretty well, with the counsellor offering to help improve my resume, as well as point me in the directions of appropriate jobs. She was even open to coordinating with the provider I'm currently with. And speaking of that provider, the most recent caseworker seems very proactive an on-the-ball, which is great!

I also attended my first networking event last week. I'd been seeing ads and getting invites for a little while, but was always either busy or to scared to go. This one was called Networking for Nerds, advertised video games, trivia, and poutine, and was fairly inexpensive, so it seemed like a good choice. I even made my own business cards to take!

The event went pretty well. I knew a couple people, so I didn't feel totally on my own. Even though the night was geared more towards the tech industry, I still managed to make a couple connections within Ottawa's disability community, which I'm already starting to hear back from. Oh, and I was one of the winner's of their trivia contest. Turns out all that Star Wars and comic knowledge was good for something, after all!

I've still got a long way to go before my employment and advocacy hopes become reality, but so far, so good.

Cheers!
